Experience the world of winter alpinism in one of the greatest mountain ranges on the planet. This course is designed for those who want to move confidently on snow, ice, and mixed terrain, learn ropework and safety systems, and prepare for more serious alpine objectives.

It is a complete, intensive program suitable both for motivated beginners and for climbers who want to strengthen their foundation and gain confidence in winter conditions.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, you will be able to:
  • move safely in crampons on snow, ice, and mixed terrain
  • use ice tools effectively
  • manage the rope while moving
  • place reliable protection (snow anchors, ice screws, rock gear)
  • build anchors and belay your partner
  • understand winter alpine hazards and manage risk
  • read terrain and choose a safe and efficient line of ascent

Course Program

Day 1 — Winter Movement Basics

  • Crampon techniques on snow and ice
  • Introduction to ice tools
  • Fundamental safety skills
  • Self-arrest and avalanche awareness basics

Day 2 — Ropework & Movement on Alpine Terrain

  • Moving on a rope team
  • Snow ridges and mixed sections
  • Anchor building
  • Belaying and transitions

Day 3 — Ice or Mixed Climbing (depending on conditions)

  • Steeper ice movement
  • Using ice screws
  • Ice quality assessment
  • Multi-pitch practice

Day 4 — Glacier Skills

  • Glacier travel techniques
  • Knots, self-protection, setting fixed ropes
  • Crevasse rescue fundamentals

Day 5 — Alpine Route

A full alpine ascent in the Aiguille du Midi, Vallée Blanche, or Grands Montets area.
The goal is to consolidate all skills and apply them in real terrain.

Day 6 (optional)

Additional alpine route or advanced technical training, depending on experience and conditions.

(Rental equipment, transportation, food, and lift access — if required — are paid separately.)
